The ripple effect of Homesharing: How one match can change everything

When we think about ageing well, we often think about practical needs — safety, mobility, perhaps a bit of help around the house. But what we don’t always talk about is the emotional need we all share, regardless of age: the need for connection.

At Homeshare North East, we believe that companionship is just as vital as care. That’s why we’ve built a service that matches older people who are living alone and have a spare room with someone kind, responsible, and looking for affordable accommodation — known as a Homesharer. In return for a place to live, the Homesharer offers friendship and around 10 hours a week of low level practical support like cooking, shopping, or simply being a friendly presence.

It’s not just about shared space — it’s about shared life. And the impact goes far beyond just the two people involved.

The benefit to older people: Staying independent, safely.

Many older people want to remain in the comfort of their own home, but feel increasingly isolated or struggle with everyday tasks. A Homesharer brings companionship, routine, and an extra pair of hands, without replacing independence.

The result?

  • Less loneliness

  • More confidence

  • A sense of purpose and connection

One Householder told us, “It’s just knowing someone else is here that makes me feel safe. We cook together some nights and it’s lovely to share stories over dinner.”

The benefit to families: peace of mind without pressure.

For families, knowing that their loved one has a consistent, trustworthy companion in the home is a huge relief, especially if they live far away or juggle other responsibilities.

Homesharing offers reassurance that Mum or Dad isn’t just “getting by” — they’re thriving, with a support system that’s social, not clinical.

The benefit to the community: A smarter way forward.

Homesharing is also a cost effective, community based alternative to traditional care. It reduces strain on public services, prevents unnecessary hospital admissions, and brings different generations together.

For the Homesharer, often a student, key worker, or someone priced out of renting, it’s a lifeline. They get a safe, affordable place to live and the chance to make a real difference in someone’s life.

In a world that often feels disconnected, Homesharing creates mutual value. It’s not a service. It’s a relationship. And it’s one that more communities need to know about.

If you know an older person who is living alone and would benefit from friendship, support, and a little extra company at home, Homeshare might be the perfect fit.
