Choosing connection: why now is the time to say yes to Homeshare

In a world that’s more digitally connected than ever before, the truth is many older people in our communities are feeling more isolated than ever. Living alone, especially after the loss of a partner, can bring a quiet, persistent kind of loneliness that affects mental health, wellbeing, and day to day independence.

At Homeshare North East, we believe no one should have to feel that way.

Our service is built on a simple idea: bringing together people who need a little support at home with people who need somewhere affordable to live. It’s a practical, safe, and heartwarming way to build companionship, strengthen communities, and allow people to stay in their own homes for longer.

Right now, we’re seeing increasing demand from people hoping to become Homesharers - kind, thoughtful individuals who are ready to lend a hand and offer companionship in exchange for affordable accommodation. But what we need are more people to come forward as Householders.

Could you (or someone you know) be a Householder?

You might be:

  • Living alone with a spare room

  • Feeling a bit anxious about evenings or mealtimes

  • Finding everyday tasks like shopping or preparing meals a little harder than they used to be

  • Wanting more company and conversation in your home

Homeshare is not care, and Homesharers do not provide personal or medical support. But they can bring structure, reassurance, and warmth into the everyday, sharing meals, walking the dog, watering the garden, or simply being there when it matters most.

Common Questions We Hear:

“Can I trust someone living in my home?”

Absolutely. All our Homesharers are enhanced DBS checked, thoroughly vetted, reference checked, and carefully matched based on your personality, lifestyle and preferences. We’re here every step of the way, offering ongoing support and monitoring to ensure it’s a positive experience for everyone.

“What if it doesn’t work out?”

We offer a trial period, and both parties can end the match at any time with notice. We’re here to support and guide you, never to pressure or rush.

The Impact

Homeshare arrangements can be life-changing, not just for the Householder, but for families, carers, and even wider social care systems. Companionship and gentle help at home can prevent loneliness, reduce stress, and delay the need for formal care.

But most of all, Homeshare helps people feel like themselves again – living in the home they love, with someone to share the small things with.
